The three DTV categories
Workcation. Digital nomads, remote workers, foreign talent and freelancers. London asks for an employment contract or certificate, or a portfolio that shows your freelance work.
Thai soft power activities. For example Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sports training, medical treatment, seminars or music festivals. You show a confirmation from the school, event or hospital.
Family. The spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder, with proof of the relationship.
London also asks every applicant for a police certificate issued within the last 6 months.
Who the DTV suits
- You work remotely for clients or an employer outside Thailand.
- You want to spend long stretches in Thailand over the next few years, not settle for good.
- You can show 500,000 THB in savings.
When another visa fits better
- You want to settle long-term. Compare Thailand Privilege and the LTR visa.
- You need to work for a Thai company. The DTV does not allow that; ask about a work permit route or the LTR.
- You are 50 or over and retired. The retirement visa may be simpler.
DTV visa FAQ
How long can I stay on a DTV?
The visa is valid for 5 years with multiple entries. Each entry gives you up to 180 days, which can be extended once inside Thailand by up to 180 days. Then you must leave and can come back on the same visa while it is valid.
How much money do I need for the DTV?
At least 500,000 THB. The embassy in London puts it at no less than GBP 12,000 (500,000 THB). Checked 25 October 2026.
Can I work in Thailand on a DTV?
You can keep working remotely for employers and clients outside Thailand. The Thai embassy in Budapest says DTV holders cannot get a Thai work permit, work for companies in Thailand or do freelance work for Thai clients.
Can I bring my family on a DTV?
Yes. The spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder can apply in the family category with proof of relationship and their own proof of funds.
How much does the DTV cost?
Each embassy sets the fee in its own currency. London lists GBP 300 and Budapest EUR 350. Check the embassy where you will apply.
Is the DTV a good visa for moving to Thailand for good?
The Budapest embassy says the DTV is meant for its stated purposes and not for long-term relocation. If you want to settle, compare the retirement visa, the LTR visa and Thailand Privilege.
Can I use a DTV to put my child in a Thai school?
No. The Budapest embassy says a DTV for a child whose main purpose is school will not be accepted; a Non-ED visa is the route for that.
